Position Openings at Africa Agenda

Also, please take note that these positions are voluntary and non paying.  Our preference would be for volunteers who live in the Denver Metro area and with the ability to attend monthly meetings of our organization.

Secretary/Membership Director responsibilities

The secretary of Africa Agenda is charged with taking notes and reporting on the activities of the organization. The responsibilities of this position include the following:

*      Attend meetings of the organization on a regular basis, taking notes of the meetings and transcribing these notes into reports for the benefit of members of the organization.

*      Working with the board chair, the CEO and staff of Africa Agenda to prepare the agenda for meetings.  

*      Work with the organizations staff to help prepare correspondence about special events and activities of the organization.

*      Assist the organization with any initiatives/programs which require special skills and talents that Africa Agenda staff cannot perform or carry out as part of their work assignments.

*      Help with new member registration, tracking and retaining membership in the organization.

*      The secretary position is open to anyone who believes in the mission of Africa Agenda. 

Treasurer/Assistant-Treasurer responsibilities

The treasurer or financial director of Africa Agenda is charged with planning, preparing and reporting on the finances of the organization.

These responsibilities include the following:

*      Work with the board of directors and CEO to determine the financial needs of the organization and to figure out ways that these needs can be met.

*      Work with the board of directors to prepare a financial plan that ensures Africa Agenda’s long term sustainability.

*      Work with the board of directors, CEO and staff of Africa Agenda to make bank deposits, make payments and withdrawals from the organization bank account.

*      Work with a third part payroll service or bank to plan payment of salaries and other stipend to Africa Agenda staff as determined by the board of directors.

*      Prepare monthly  financial statements; incomes and expenses for the organization

*      Review and audit the finances of the organization on a quarterly basis to ascertain compliance with state and IRS laws about tax exempt organizations.

*      Collaborate with an authorized/certified CPA to prepare the annual financial reports of Africa Agenda.

*      Prepare and present the financial reports for the organization at the end of year board of directors meetings as well as during general member meetings of the organization. 

*      Together with the board of directors and staff of Africa Agenda, the treasurers will a custodian of the financial records of the organization. This means handling paperwork as well as keeping tracks of receipts and other financial records as determined by the board of the organization.

*      In compliance with the role of being a board of director of Africa Agenda, the treasurer or financial director will be someone who understands the by-laws and constitution of Africa Agenda.

 

 

Board Chair/Vice-Chair responsibilities

The responsibilities of the board chair of Africa Agenda include the following:

*      Chair the monthly meetings of the organization. Meetings usually last about two hours or less.

*      Exercise leadership as board chair; show credibility, decorum and project authority over the affairs of the organization. This person must be someone who knows and understands the mission of Africa Agenda. 

*      Review the minutes from each meeting and make decisions about a possible way forward with input from other board members.

*      Set the agenda for each meeting and work to deliver on it.

*      Lead a team of 8 or more board of directors towards an understanding and execution of the mission and vision of the organization.

*      Encourage and support the organization in the execution of the goals and objectives set forth by the board. The current and future goals and objectives of the organization would be set based on combined input from the organizations staff; CEO, assistants and volunteers and the advisory board.

*      Understand the constitution and by-laws of the organization.

*      Help and assist with the organization with its outreach efforts towards constituents that can serve and benefit the organization.

*      Work and encourage the board of directors towards supporting the organizations in its fundraising goals.

*      Hold the organization and its management accountable in the leadership and execution of its stated mission.

*      Meet regularly and work with the organizations CEO and staff f to know the affairs of the organization and support it in moving its mission forward.

The chair of the Africa Agenda advisory board is an unpaid volunteer position. Similar to the role of a board of director of Africa Agenda, the board chair position is open to anyone who believes in the mission of Africa Agenda

The World Bank’s Country Performance and Institutional Assessment (CPIA) score is a broad measure of policy and institutional performance. With regard to Africa they have used 16 items to measure performance based on economic management, structural policies, policies for social inclusion and equity and public sector management and institutions.

In 2005 the CPIA score for African countries was 2.8. By 2006, it was 3.2

According to the World Bank, countries with CPIA scores of greater than or equal to 3.5 by 2006 tend to have higher growth and lower inflation than those with lower than 3.5. Only exception is Zimbabwe.

Sign of the Times in Africa

In 2008, the Probability for conflict has declined in many African Nations from 17 to 6.

From 1980’s to 2008- About 10 countries experienced hyper inflation at various points in time

Now, Inflation in Africa has come down since 1995. Inflation has fallen below 10% since 2002, except in Zimbabwe
