Breaking the Africa Stereotype

Greetings,

Happy Labor Day! I hope this email reaches you in good health. In the United States, it is said that Labor Day marks the unofficial end of the summer season. This means it’s been very hot out here for a few months. Let’s not even talk about global warming, because it’s real! That’s another subject entirely. For now, I am sure many of you have taken some time off for summer rest, or perhaps just a few days to unwind with family and friends. Whatever season you are in – whether, in Lagos (Nigeria), Pretoria (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya), Algiers (Algeria), or Blantyre (Malawi), we wish you the best during this time!

At Africa Agenda our team has been busy prepping for the next Africa Summit in Colorado. This is why we are pleased to announce the 2019 Africa Summit in Colorado. This year’s summit will hold on Friday, November 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Posner Center for International Development The theme is: You Have an Impact – Breaking the Africa Stereotype. The summit is a signature program of Africa Agenda, a community activity that ties in with the organization’s mission to shape the news.

More than ever before, we need you to be a part of this year’s event. You are our community! We invite you to come for food, drinks, and music, and to discuss the issues that impact us all. A key feature this year is the expansion of table discussions from 10 to 15 tables. Discussions will be facilitated by community leaders and experts, followed by a report from each table. A report from the 2018 summit will be available for pick up by participants.

Now to the big question – why are we doing this? As our tireless board chairman, A. Scott DuPree, said, despite all of our efforts to bring change and make a difference, “the realities sometimes get lost behind a curtain of invisibility.” Africans and the African continent are still the victims of plenty of misinformation and stereotypes. The African continent cannot be left alone. The work to change things is not a one-time effort. This must go on for as long as African stereotyping and misinformation continues.

As you wind down the summer, we ask that you mark the date, Friday, November 1 at 6 p.m. on your calendar for another rendezvous – with Africa Agenda.
